When Brighton drew away to West Ham United, allowing for Wrexham to confirm their second league title in a row, questions needed to be asked of whether they could truly keep up with Alonso’s Red Dragon’s. Well this years transfer window has been, and gone, and I’ll be honest: I haven’t truly been impressed.
Let’s start with manager Vanya Veremko‘s Summer habit’s. Instead of staying at home and gelling with the squad over the Pre-Season break, he decided to jet about Japan for the entire World Cup, and left Jesse Lingard, rather than his Assistant Mason Burstow? I also have it on good authority that rather than checking in on his squad’s results, he instead spent time celebrating with his FORMER players from Wrexham. Whilst this appears to have had little effect on results on the pitch, with a 100% win record in 4 games, you have to question why he could have possibly thought this was more important than preparing his squad for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Then we move onto their Transfer Strategy. Or lack thereof. Until deadline day you could argue that he was absolutely content just to go at it again with the same squad and hope things click better. They had let 23 year old Franco Suárez, a player out on loan last season anyway, leave for £20 million and replaced him with Brighton Academy Graduate and 1 season Paris Saint-Germain player, 35 year old Lawson Wort, for £8.25 million. Apart from a lot of loaning their youth players out and the brilliant free signing of Danny Squire to bolster their attacking options, it looked like the only signing they intended to complete was a potential £47 million move for Wrexham’s 26 year old defender Fernando Pereira. And then, disaster struck.
On the 31st of August, Paris Saint-Germain completed the signing of Fernando Pereira. Whilst his official stance is that he chose them for their squad strength, I can confirm that the £575k per week was more than enough to tip the scales to the Parisian’s favour. This left Vanya scrambling on deadline day for a new addition for the back-line. Whilst they were rejected by the likes of Brazilian keeper Johnwayne who chose to stay at Corinthians, they managed to get a £66 million deal for 26 year old Burnley and USA defender Luu Thanh Tung. Luu is an interesting player that Vanya spent multiple sessions watching at the World Cup, and while they ultimately failed to make it to the Semi Finals, Luu Thanh Tung did shine in a middling American side. While I think he’s a good player and could provide solid cover, I do question why he was brought in, since they didn’t sell anyone in his position.

So the question becomes how has Vanya’s Brighton fared compared to Xabi’s Wrexham in the Transfer market? Honestly, a lot better. Wrexham have lost a few key players this window, and their replacement’s aren’t currently any better than those who left. But it isn’t for me to say, they will play each other pretty soon, on the 22nd. Who do you think will get the leg up in the Title Race?
